collage of 5 headshots of woman with different backgrounds, clothes, and expressions

Some people come in for their headshots looking for just one image, and that's perfectly fine. Others need or want a variety of images. I have a blog post showing lots of different areas where your images can be used. Either way, you might not know exactly what you are looking for until you see it. That's why my studio has a changing room, and the session is designed to give you ample time to collaborate to make sure you get what you love.

The image above shows how you can have a wide variety of images in just a single headshot session. You can get all the images you need at once so that you can have a handy library of images to use throughout the year or when different occasions call for an image, such as a speaking engagement. If you use my hair and makeup artist, you only need to prep hair and makeup once. But - the images don't look like you took them all at once!

Here are just some of the ways I collaborate to maximize variety in your headshot session.

We try different backgrounds

With the flip of a switch, I can isolate the background to go from white to black and any shade of grey in between, or even any color. We do it in real time so you can choose the exact shade you like. Because I light the background separately from you, the light on you stays perfectly right for you,

We try different lighting

In the collage below, there are three distinctly lighting setups used, each purposefully used to match the mood and tone of the expression and overall look of the image.

We try different outfits

My clients are encouraged to bring as many outfits as they like. We may not use them all, but it doesn't hurt to have options. Getting the more formal images in addition to casual images give you much more potential usage applications for the future.

We change up hairstyles

Hair can be hard to predict in terms of how it will look with different outfits and poses. We try it all ways. In front, in back, half front, and often we will end with at least one variatioin of hair up. It can totally change the look and vibe of the image.

We try closed mouth and teeth versions

Many clients think a smile must show teeth. However, you can get friendly looks that I still consider as smiles without showing teeth. However, it's actually really hard to look natural and relaxed with a closed mouth smile, so it takes guiding and coaching.

Of couse, some people don't want to actually be smiling closed mouth and that's ok too!

We go beyond headshots

I have a whole blog post about going beyond chest-up headshots. All of these are taken right in my studio. Just a few changes make a world of difference...all in the same session.

There's so many more ways we get variety, with posing, changing directions, adding props, and experimenting.
