I've been working with Athari Biosciences since 2023 to showcase the incredible work they are doing here in Loudoun County, impacting the world of Biosciences nationwide. The word ‘Athari’ means ‘impact’ in Swahili. And Athari Bio is making an impact. I'm always so impressed with their commitment to their mission, and excited to share just a sample of some of the images I've created for them.

What is Athari Bio's mission?

Their mission statement: Our mission is to deliver comprehensive and innovative solutions that enhance public health, close the talent gap of young research professionals, and ultimately prepare the next generation of research and STEMM experts.

What do they do?

Athari Bio is a biotechnology organization that is focused on advancing healthcare through research, diagnostics, and education. It's not just a few different services, Athari Bio intersects science, technology, and community impact—working to solve complex medical challenges while also building the next generation of STEMM professionals.

Not only does Athari Bio deliver a broad range of services across the healthcare and life sciences ecosystem, they conduct cutting-edge biomedical research and provides advanced laboratory testing through its CLIA-certified Biosafety Level 2 lab.

But beyond technical services, Athari Bio invests heavily in education, workforce training, and outreach programs to strengthen the broader healthcare ecosystem. So instead of operating in silos, Athari Bio actually combines research, diagnostics, clinical support, and workforce development under one umbrella. This allows them to move discoveries from the lab to real-world application more efficiently.

Leadership

Susan Mitchell is the visionary behind Athari Bio. A community leader, she saw the need for combining technological innovation with mentorship, training, and career pathways in STEMM fields. She has invested heavily in hands-on programs, internships, and initiatives like STEMM training for students. Through her leadership, Athari Bio helps close the talent gap in biomedical fields and creates career pathways for underrepresented communities. Their outreach efforts connect academia, industry, and local communities—ensuring that scientific innovation translates into real-world benefits and greater health equity.

I really could wax on for a long time about Susan. The world needs more of her. She has also assembled a diverse and talented group of scientists and scholars who believe and live Athari Bio's mission.

Internships

A core program includes the internships Athari Bio provides yearly. These internships are not just for show; the interns get hands on wet lab experience, assay development, and testing, along with mentorship and leadership training.

A Leader In The Greater Biotech Community

One of the many ways Athari Bio participates in supporting the biotech community is hosting Virginia Bio's ongoing event "Bio & Beer", a networking event that brings together industry leaders, research advocates, and members of the local bioscience community. I know first hand from photographing multiple events that Athari Bio is a fantastic and generous host.

An ecosystem

This is a word I hear Susan use a lot. Athari Bio isn’t just building better diagnostics or conducting research—it’s building an ecosystem. Athari Bio combines science, education, and community engagement. The result will be to make healthcare more accessible, more personalized, and more impactful for everyone. If anyone can do it, Athari Bio will.
